The 2018 FGI Guidelines Are Here

  by Megan Headley | Jan 17, 2018

The Facility Guidelines Institute and MADCAD have announced the release of the 2018 Guidelines for Design and Construction.

The Guidelines have undergone significant changes since publication of the 2014 edition. In the update, FGI has divided the guidelines into three separate books:
  • Guidelines for Design and Construction of Outpatient Facilities
  • Guidelines for Design and Construction of Residential Health, Care, and Support Facilities
  • Guidelines for Design and Construction of Hospitals

During his presentations last year for the HCI co-hosted Hospital, Outpatient Facilities & Medical Office Buildings Summits, FGI CEO Doug Erickson explained that the new separate document, Guidelines for Design and Construction of Outpatient Facilities, will outline outpatient facility types, common elements for outpatient facilities and approaches to applying requirements to facility projects.

The updates in the 2018 Guidelines for Design and Construction of Residential Health, Care, and Support Facilities address acoustic and lighting requirements, grab bar configurations, facilities for individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities and long-term residential substance abuse treatment facilities. Erickson also noted that a new section has been added on the Guidelines for Design and Construction of Hospitals on the design of telemedicine spaces. This section addresses a number of physical environment issues such as privacy, acoustics, lighting and site identification.

The Guidelines documents are now available for purchase as single-user and site licenses on MADCAD.com, an online, subscription-based platform supporting compliance with U.S. building codes and standards. FGI notes that print copies and print/site license bundles will be available to ship in February.

Erickson, or a member of the Guidelines revisions committee, will speak at Summits in Charlotte, Cleveland, and Orlando this spring. See the full schedule at www.hcinstitute.info/events_summits.html.
